Getting Around Cape York

DOGIT:

Many areas around Weipa fall under the title: DOGIT or Deed Of Grant In Trust. This was a facility provided by the Queensland state government to essentially allow communities that were missions in a past life to become self governing. There are many DOGIT areas nearby, including Napranum, Aurukun and Mapoon. For a detailed explaination about DOGIT and it’s history a good starting place is here. Part of the function of a council under a DOGIT is to issue permits for camping, etc. If you are interested in camping around Weipa, you will need to obtain a permit from the relevant council.

Alcohol Restrictions:

Whether you agree personally with the efficacy of an alcohol managment plan so close to a wet area (ie. Weipa) doesn’t matter. The fact is, just travelling with alcohol in your car in many places in cape york is illegal and heavy fines are imposed by the state government. You can find much more specific information here. Please don’t trust the advice of friends on this one — check the information and be sure, if you get caught with alcohol in a restricted area ‘ignorance’ is no plea…

You can also call the alcohol limits information line on 1300 789 000.
